01 / THE CONTEXT
Where physical operations meet digital systems.
A single terminal transaction connects a driver, a facility, physical equipment and the systems that record custody transfer. Access must be authorized, the product accurately measured, and the transaction reflected in inventory and business records. Each step has to fit the operation at the site.
TerminalBOSS supports these workflows across truck and rail terminals. VantEdge acquired the platform from Schneider Electric and continues its development; Denting the Universe’s principals have worked on the product in connection with VantEdge. The product and its customer relationships belong to VantEdge.
A 2024 industry profile identified Cenovus, Plains and Canadian Natural Resources Limited as long-standing TerminalBOSS users. Across its product portfolio, VantEdge also serves major pipeline operators including Trans Mountain, South Bow, Pembina and TC Energy. VantEdge reports 75+ active clients and approximately 70% of the Canadian terminal market; these figures describe VantEdge’s business, not separate Denting the Universe contracts.
02 / THE PLATFORM
A connected view of a terminal transaction.
VantEdge describes TerminalBOSS as a terminal automation platform spanning gate entry, authorization, loading and offloading, measurement, electronic ticketing and inventory. The platform can connect with existing terminal hardware and enterprise systems.
The platform brings together programmable logic controllers, meters and other terminal equipment with the software that records transactions. VantEdge describes American Petroleum Institute-compliant volume calculations, electronic ticketing, inventory balancing and integrations with enterprise resource planning and energy trading systems. The result is an operational environment where physical movement and business records need to stay aligned.
That means coordinating several different kinds of system in one transaction: identity and authorization at the gate, safety conditions at the loading equipment, measurements from terminal devices, and the ticket, allocation and inventory information used by business systems. Each terminal has its own equipment and operating procedures, so the software must bridge physical processes and digital records without treating the facility like a simple data-entry form.
03 / SECURITY & OPERATIONAL SAFETY
Authorization and safeguards at the point of operation.
Terminal access and product movement require more than a login. VantEdge describes driver authentication, validation of credentials such as licenses and safety training, and transaction workflows that restrict access to authorized personnel. Its platform also maintains transaction records that support historical review.
Physical safeguards are part of the operating environment. VantEdge describes safety interlocks that prevent loadout until required conditions are met, including a grounding system that verifies the truck is grounded before a transaction starts. These are operational safeguards; their configuration depends on the terminal and its equipment.
VantEdge publicly identifies TerminalBOSS with SOC 2 Type II assurance. This is a statement about VantEdge’s product and service, not a certification or assurance claim for Denting the Universe or any other platform.
04 / RELEVANCE
Engineering for the environment around the software.
Industrial software has to make sense both at the terminal gate and in the back office. Different facilities bring different equipment, operating procedures and integration requirements, so the software must reflect the physical process as well as the data behind it.
This experience informs how we approach complex systems: follow the transaction from its first authorization through the operational and business records it creates, and design for the people responsible at each step.
